DrySyn Spiral Evaporator Evaluation:
What type of laboratory is the product used in: Pharmaceutical R & D Lab
What key work is undertaken in your laboratory and how does the product help?: Organic synthesis on small scale, great way to transfer chemical samples into vials, or as part of work up procedure when vials used for chemical synthesis.
What did you use before the Spiral Evaporator?: Rotary evaporators, blowing gas onto small samples in vial (inefficient). Now have a Biotage V-10.
What were the issues you had before choosing to purchase the Spiral Evaporator?: Transferring liquid, gums and “glass” like products to vials.
Now that you’ve had the DrySyn Spiral Evaporator in use for years, what do you find to be the biggest benefit?: Efficient (albeit slow) removal of DMSO at reasonable temperature (ie. no greater than 50 oC).
What solvents do you use the Spiral Evaporator with?: All common organic synthesis solvents, eg. DCM, ethyl acetate, ether, heptane, DMF, DMS, methanol.
Can you describe your setup of the Spiral Evaporator (eg. pump/cold trap)?: Have it attached to house vac with a small dry ice cold trap in line.
What do you think of the size of the Spiral Evaporator?: Ideal for setting where fume-hood space is at a premium.
How robust do you find the Spiral Evaporator?: Very.
Do you ever clean the Spiral Evaporator and, if so, how easy do you find it to do so?: Yes very easy, I clean the adaptors, tubing and connectors; very easy with volatile solvents.
Would you recommend the Spiral Evaporator to other people?: Yes, I’ve managed to use it in conjunction with the OCTO reaction station as volatile solvents can be removed from the OCTO 16mm tubes.
